As most of you probably know, the new The Sword album is out now and it is a treat to the ears indeed. I reviewed it on Altsounds here. Check the review out, then come back here to hear my three personal favorite songs on this album.

Done reading the review? My first fave song from this album is the title track 'Warp Riders'. Voivod meets Pentagram, yet pure The Sword. One of the most paranoid sounding, flawless space metal songs of all time.

Then there is the chilling final track (The Night the Sky Cried) Tears of Fire).

And we can't forget 'Tre Brujas'. The video is amazing.

Hello, folks. Long time no see. I've been writing music reviews for Altsounds.com. I will continue to do short music posts and other non-music related musings here. I thought long and hard about it...I want to keep this blog open. There's lots of movies I want to review here as well. Chrome Hoof

An increible band I was just introduced to by a friend on Facebook...Chrome Hoof. Heavy psyche prog 1970's space rock jazz fusion . Brilliant. They remind me of a cross between Hawkwind, Magma, King Crimson, and Chrome. Check them out. I'm going to be tracking down more of their stuff...Thanks Jeremy!

Danzig: Deth Red Sabaoth

Ok. I'm a hugeDanzig fan. From The Misfits, to Samhain, and on....he's had a few setbacks, but you mostly cannot go wrong with anything the guy touches. I'm going to try to step back a bit and give myself a little distance on this review. First off, I was a bit skeptical about picking up this album. Danzig has been around so long, what else can he do that he hasn't done already? And does Danzig still have it? These are the questions I was seeking an answer to by picking up this album. Did it answer my questions? Read on.

I had read many good things about "Deth Red Sabaoth" and the few short samples I listened to were incredible. So I picked it up and was initially blown away. From the first track "Hammer of the Gods" I was taken back to the bloody blues filled world of Danzig from his first three works. Such incredible vocals, and one of the nastiest head banging riffs of all time. The next few tracks keep up this same pace...a lot more guitar solos than usual for Danzig but they are heavy and bluesy and they fit. At times I was taken back to the gore-soaked days of Samhain. The momentum keeps up through much of the album. Track 6 "Deth Red Moon" is perfect, one of the best Danzig songs of all time.

But does this album maintain this quality all the way through? Sadly, no. Songs such as "Ju Ju Bone" and "Black Candy" sound like he is trying too hard to maintain his devil blues schtick. Plus the pace really begins to slow and meander towards the end on "Pyre of Souls" (both versions). He redeems himself on the last track "Left Hand Rise Above", a classic deep dark Danzig ballad, but is it enough? I think it is.

"Deth Red Sabaoth" is still a pretty solid album that could have been made better with the omission of three or four songs. Does Danzig still have it? I think he does. Did he outdo himself on originality? Not really, but it's Danzig, love him or hate him. Pick this disc up now.

Truckfighters: Mania

It's been a while since I've bought any new music. Budgetary cutbacks maybe but also I have so much to listen to in my collection already. Last week I finally broke down and made two purchases: Danzig's "Deth Red Sabaoth" and Truckfighters "Mania. Danzig will get a review very soon, but first I want to talk about the new Truckfighters.

First of all Truckfighters "Mania" was released in 2009. It is still in import status here in the U.S. but is available for download for $8.99 over at Amazon. The Truckighters have been one of my favorite bands as of late. This is their third full length album. Many might look at them as a somewhat derivative Kyuss clone from Sweden but if you look underneath there is so much more.

First of all, these guys take their desert rock seriously. Heavy and disorienting as a blinding dust storm, the Truckfighters bring the 100 plus degree tempuratures on and you can feel it in every note they play. Massive face melting riffs, thundering bass...everything you could ask for. Look a bit closer. There is a huge King Crimson influence lying just underneath...most of their work has a King Crimson "Red" era feel to it. Deep dark shuddering, dissonant bass, slightly atonal guitar work, volatile time changes that crush you at the drop of a hat, a skewed sense of melody...all the while threatening to give you whiplash from irresistible head banging grooves. Add to it the smooth melodic Ian Astbury-esque vocals and you have a winner every time.

"Mania" builds on the momentum of their first two works. Their first album "Gravity X" was very straightforward and downright irresistible. It's a classic and hard to beat. Their second one "Phi" was very angular, darker and deeper. Their latest one is a cross between the two, bringing in the hooks more so but at the same time keeping things as trippy as possible. They bring in some space rock touches here and there and also add a bit of a Led Zeppelin feel towards the end on "Monster". The song wrtiting is clearly the best of their career on this album. The first track "Last Curfew" slowly builds...quiet and subdued with a nice bass line and subtle guitar work...it makes me wish I was in the desert right now. It draws you into the album and then you're hooked. The second track "Monte Gargano" blows your head off and blasts you into space with seriously catchy almost poppy hooks. The third track "The New High" is classic Truckighters...earth shaking, head banging desert metal with choruses so catchy they rival The Misfits or Fu Manchu at times. As the disc progresses, things grow stranger, and darker, heavier, and more hallucinatory as you begin to question your sanity. All in all an incredible work. Is it their best effort yet? I personally prefer their first release "Gravity X' for the sheer energy level alone. "Mania" is a very strong release, however. You can't go wrong with any of their three albums. I suggest getting them all, but that's just me...

Abdullah, a curious melodic doom/goth metal band that came out of Celeveland, Ohio. I really love their self-titled first album that came out in 1999. Listening to these guys is like a refreshing blast of cold air on a hot, muggy summer day...calm, cool, and still...their music really refreshes the mind. Their first album is incredible. Imagine the heavy deep synapse melting riffs of Saint Vitus, Black Sabbath and Trouble in their prime mixed with the melodic vocals and harmonies of Faith No More and King's X. Throw in a hefty dose of Sisters of Mercy worship (yes, you heard that right...never thought that doom metal and The Sisters could co-exist, eh?) What you have is one slow paced, dark, deep, melodic, and beautiful slab of doom. These guys take their time. This album has to creep up on you. You may not like it at first, but when it hits it hits hard.

Give Abdullah a listen. Their next album, "Graveyard Poetry" abandons the goth element and goes for a more fast paced New wave of British Heavy Metal feel but keeps the psych doom element intact. Their first album is my favorite. Get it first, then if you like what you hear, pick up "Graveyard Poetry". Both have just been re-released on Meteor City.

So Nebula Broke Up...

So Nebula broke up. Pretty big deal. Where are the space rock bands that will fill their shoes? These guys have left behind them a legacy. The band was formed in 1997 after guitarist Eddie Glass and drummer Ruben Romano left Fu Manchu to form their own band....with more emphasis on heavy space psych metal/rock than your usual desert/stoner metal. These guys drew more from Hendrix, Hawkwind, and Helios Creed, but that unmistakable sound was still there....that Stooges meets Black Flag meets Black Sabbath sound of Fu Manchu.

Anyway, Nebula's music had become more improvisatory and brilliant, more truly otherworldly over the years, leaving the earth and desert behind. Metal that will blast you off into the stratosphere and disrupt your circuits for good.I will leave you with one track from their latest EP as an epilogue because it was their best at that moment. Nebula's greatness improved with every new disc. These guys were prolific, not a bad album out there, so check them out.

Baroness: The Red Album

Ok, right from the start I need to apologize for my previously stated dislike of this album. It's just that took a while to grow on me, I guess. It's not quite as impressive as their latest release "Blue Record". It's a bit more instrumental heavy, yet still formidable.

Baroness' "Red Album" (2007) is a smoke-filled maze of winding, quiet, trippy prog-rock instrumentals a la early King Crimson that build into heavier stoner rock grooves, then eventually explode into all out apocalypse then melt away. They haven't quite perfected their home-spun blend of Mastadon, Fugazi, and The Sword yet, but they are pretty close. Excellent blend of prog metal, hardcore, and stoner metal.

"Red Album" takes a bit of patience. Once again, it is not nearly as gargantuan as "Blue Record" but still a good listen. It tends to meander a bit with the instrumentals, but I think that's the way they meant it....to lull you into a psychedelic stupor and then melt your face off. Highly recommended, but pick up "Blue Record" first.

The Neckbones Live Coming Soon to Oxford...

What's that, you say? Yeah, you heard it right. The Neckbones are performing in their hometown of Oxford Friday, July 16th, starting at 10:00 PM. They will be at Proud Larry's on The Square. Don't know exactly where that is but I will find it.

The Neckbones were an insane punk band from Oxford, Mississippi. They put out two albums in the mid to late 1990's. Their music could best be described as a very drunken and adrenaline fueled Stooges. They are known for imbibing more than a bit much and often passing out in mid-performance. These guys know the true meaning of punk and are obsessed with gambling and drinking and B-Movies. Man can they put on a show!

Anyways, that was the 1990's and this is 2010. They haven't released anything new that I know of since the 1990's. I think this is more of a reunion gig than anything else but I may be wrong. I don't care if they're all in their mid 30's now and have straightened themselves out maybe. I just want to hear some Neckbones!

Calabrese: They Call Us Death

This is what I've been waiting for for a long time...a new Calabrese album! These guys are the Kings of horror-punk. Second only to The Misfits. I picked this one up yesterday and I've been hooked.

"They Call Us Death" is a very strong release from Calabrese. It heads in a darker direction that their previous efforts. The feel is not quite the same as the sometimes mindless, catchy, cartoonish evil of their previous efforts. This album delves into a bit deeper and darker direction. Don't get me wrong, this record is full of face-melting speed and hooks that will remain in your head forever. There is something darker and more macabre amiss here, an overall theme of death. The guitar work and chords are more complex and rich. The pace is unrelenting, and the hellish energy level never lets up. The sound of this album is a more of a deep, blood red crimson than the usual run of the mill black. I would compare it to The Misfits "Earth AD" in a way. Brutal, yet the hooks are still there. It is not necessarily as fast, but the feel reminds me of that album. The choruses are super catchy, top notch, and never let up. Another killer record from Calabrese. Pick it up right away, it will rip the flesh from your bones.

Baroness: Blue Record

Ok. I know I'm a bit late here on this. This album came out last year, but I just recently picked it up, and this disc has been glued to my ears ever since. I wasn't very impressed with their previous release "The Red Album", but Baroness' latest "The Blue Record" has blown me away.

Where do I even start here? First of all, Baroness has morphed into a perfect blend of Fugazi, King Crimson, Mastodon, and The Sword. Smart, disturbing prog metal morphs with hardcore melodies and ages old heavy as hell metal riffery. What you have is an extremely addictive mix. The vocals are tough yet melodic. The musicianship is excellent. Everything is melodic yet heavy. You will find that every track on this album will be rattling around in your head for eternity, driving you insane in a good way for more Baroness.

Even the instrumental tracks have a power on this disc. "Blue Record" is designed to be listened to from start to finish. No interruptions. There are many recurring themes. The instrumentals serve as the proverbial glue that holds this album together. In a way, this disc reminds of the albums of Captain Beyond and early Black Sabbath, where every note counts, no matter how quiet or incidental. Every sound is integral to the album as a whole.

"The Blue Record" is incredible. Doom, apocalypse, and beauty await your ears. Pick it up now if you haven't already.

Descendents: Coolidge

"I looked up one day and saw that it was up to me. You can only be a victim if you admit defeat." What a motivating song COOLIDGE is. If you've got angst, this is the cure. Very crucial song in my late teen/very early 20's years. You can never go wrong with The Descendents.
