THE MISFITS: BRAINEATERS

As far as I know, this is the only official music video The Glen Danzig Misfits ever made. Grainy and faded out...priceless. From the "Walk Among Us" album.

THE MISFITS: "SATURDAY NIGHT"

Ok. I don't know how any of you feel about the late 1990's Misftis line up. There was no Glen Danzig on vocals, but there was still Jerry Only on bass, Doyle on guitar, and Dr. Chud on drums. The music was still very hard-hitting. There was one snag, which was Michael Graves' vocals. They took a little getting used to, but were still pretty solid. He doesn't have the range of Danzig, but the Misfits cranked out some seriously good material with Michael Graves on vocals. "Saturday Night" is a song that truly shows The Misfits at their peak. Michael Graves' vocals are in tight form here, giving even Danzig a run for his money. "Saturday Night" is a perfect, gore filled throwback to the 1950's drive-in, and one of the best Misfits songs ever recorded. It appears on their 1999 album "Famous Monsters". My copy of this album has inexplicably become missing in action. Wish I still had it.

Anyway, here's "Saturday Night". Enjoy.

THE MISFITS: "WALK AMONG US"

The Misfit's "Walk Among Us"(1982) is in my opinion the greatest horror-punk album of all time. It's filled with catchy irresistible choruses and hooks, shredding tempos and guitar playing, darkly cartoonish, gory, horror and sci-fi lyrics, and the excellent vocals of Glen Danzig. Every song is a classic, with some of my favorites being "Skulls", "Astro-Zombies", "20 Eyes", and "Night of the Living Dead". You will find yourself with these songs stuck in your head for days, months, even years. I love all of The Misfits' work with Danzig, but "Walk Among Us" is my personal favorite because of the unrelenting pace and the additively catchy songs. Give this one a listen if you haven't already. I can't recommend it enough.

SAMHAIN'S "INITIUM"

Samhain's "Initium"(1984). I love this album. It is the first release from Glen Danzig after the demise of The Misfits. Unlike The Misfits' trademark violent, super catchy and addictive horror-punk, Samhain is much darker. Their sound is more gothic-rock tinged, with a slightly slower, brooding yet violent mood. The songs are still laced with some Misfit's style harmonies, but there is a blood drenched darkness that pervades the whole album. In a way, Samhain is a transition between The Misfits and Danzig's solo work. You can tell he is slowly heading in a more bluesy direction, and his Jim Morrison and Elvis Presley-esque vocal delivery is becoming more and more powerful and foreboding. The unique thing about Samhain is that Danzig plays the guitar as well. His style is more subtle and atmospheric than what you are used to hearing in The Misfits. Combine Danzig's vocals and guitar work with the bass playing of Eerie Von and the drumming of Steve Ving and you have the perfect gothic punk album, the logical next step in the career of Glen Danzig. Two of my favorite tracks from "Initium" are "All Murder, All Guts, all Fun", and "Archangel". I have included them below for your enjoyment. If you like what you hear, go pick up "Initium". It will not disappoint.
