X: "ASPIRATIONS"

X was an incredible Australian punk band formed in 1977. Their sound is driven by heavy, rumbling, powerful bass lines of Ian Rilen that carry the rhythm as well as most of the melody. The guitar playing of Stephen Lucas is dissonant, sparse at times, and always potent. The vocals are mostly spoken, and are commanding and gritty. Lyrically, X is dark, cynical, seedy, and always amusing. Although the music is almost predominantly driven by the bass guitar, X can still craft some powerful hooks when they want to. My favorite album of theirs is their debut, "Aspirations" (1979). Some of my favorite tracks are "Suck Suck", "Simulated Lovers", and "I Don't Wanna Go Out". Give this album a listen. It will not disappoint. Here's "Suck Suck" and "I Don't Wanna Go Out" . Enjoy.
