SAMHAIN'S "INITIUM"

Samhain's "Initium"(1984). I love this album. It is the first release from Glen Danzig after the demise of The Misfits. Unlike The Misfits' trademark violent, super catchy and addictive horror-punk, Samhain is much darker. Their sound is more gothic-rock tinged, with a slightly slower, brooding yet violent mood. The songs are still laced with some Misfit's style harmonies, but there is a blood drenched darkness that pervades the whole album. In a way, Samhain is a transition between The Misfits and Danzig's solo work. You can tell he is slowly heading in a more bluesy direction, and his Jim Morrison and Elvis Presley-esque vocal delivery is becoming more and more powerful and foreboding. The unique thing about Samhain is that Danzig plays the guitar as well. His style is more subtle and atmospheric than what you are used to hearing in The Misfits. Combine Danzig's vocals and guitar work with the bass playing of Eerie Von and the drumming of Steve Ving and you have the perfect gothic punk album, the logical next step in the career of Glen Danzig. Two of my favorite tracks from "Initium" are "All Murder, All Guts, all Fun", and "Archangel". I have included them below for your enjoyment. If you like what you hear, go pick up "Initium". It will not disappoint.
